Rendering the Real is an experimental space for discussion and exhibition that has resulted as an extension of my PhD research. The intention is to
contribute to encouraging an open discussion about the practice of art amongst marginalised groups within the UK.

Rendering the Real will present its first project in the form of a symposium and exhibition titled the “Fourth Moment”. This concept is an extension of Stuart Halls’ discussion about Black artists in the UK diaspora as having had three distinct moments in post war history. It was here he suggested that artists during the 90s operated in a problem space which was defined by the 80s and that the possibility of an emerging "Fourth Moment", at the time of his writing would have been too early for discussion.

The intention here is to bring forward what characterises the current mode of arts practice the “Fourth Moment” and highlight some of its challenges.
Questions about the use of the arts as a mode of regulation or liberation, and of postcolonial legacies of marginalisation visible within this practice, will be explored during the symposium and throughout the
exhibited artwork.
